What is a Legal Advocate?

Legal Advocates serve as trusted eyes and ears at the polls, helping ensure every voter can cast a ballot without obstacles. On a shift, you'll answer voter questions, flag and report problems as they come up, help track information that improves future elections, and help polling sites stay in compliance with election law.

This work sits within the broader Election Protection coalition — a nonpartisan effort stationing monitors across the state and helping staff the national voter assistance hotline, so that no voter is left without support on Election Day.

 

Why We're Prioritizing Certain Locations

Volunteer attorneys understandably tend to sign up close to home, which leaves real gaps in coverage across the state. We've identified 18 priority polling locations where that gap matters most — some because they're historically underserved or harder to reach, others because they're a genuinely reasonable stretch from major metro areas, and a couple because of a documented history of election-day issues. How It Works

  1. Learn about the opportunity. Join our information session on 10/9 at 12pm ET and check out the priority county map at L4GG.org/VAPriorityMap.

  2. Commit. Fill out our Commitment Form below to let us know you're in, and which counties you'd consider serving in.

  3. Train. Attend the required 90-minute training on October 22 — you'll be automatically registered for the Zoom session once you submit your Commitment Form. If you can’t attend, you’ll get access to view the recording afterwards.

  4. Sign up for your shift. At the October 22 training, you'll sign up directly with Virginia Election Protection for your actual shift and location assignment.

  5. Serve on Election Day. Serve a 4 hour shift (or more than one) on Tuesday, November 3.
