2018: Launching Project Corazón in Response to a Humanitarian Crisis
Project Corazón is the immigration justice initiative of Lawyers for Good Government (L4GG), created in 2018 in response to the humanitarian crisis at the U.S.–Mexico border. What began as an emergency project to provide legal aid to families separated by U.S. policies has grown into a largest and impactful coordinated pro bono effort serving migrants and asylum seekers in the United States.
2019: Rapid Mobilization at the Border
From the beginning, our greatest strength has been the ability to mobilize teams of pro bono attorneys wherever they are most needed. Whether at border camps in Matamoros, Mexico, inside immigration detention centers, or in local communities across the country, Project Corazón has brought skilled legal support directly to migrants and asylum seekers facing urgent and often life-threatening circumstances.
2020: Pivoting to Remote Representation During COVID-19
Over the years, we have continuously adapted to the changing immigration landscape. In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic led us to develop innovative remote representation models, allowing us to expand nationally and connect asylum seekers with pro bono attorneys regardless of geography. Today, our work includes in-person and virtual legal clinics, Know Your Rights trainings, and direct representation in asylum and work permit applications. We place particular emphasis on supporting those who face the greatest risks: LGBTQ+ individuals, Indigenous communities, families with children, and people with urgent medical needs or in situations of extreme vulnerability.
2021–2024: Expanding Services and Increasing Reach
This commitment has translated into a record of measurable impact that reflects both the scale of our work and the human stories behind every case. More than 10,000 asylum seekers have been served at the U.S.–Mexico border; over 400 LGBTQIA+ asylum seekers have participated Know Your Rights sessions in New York City; more than 3,000 pro bono hours have been dedicated to supporting Ukrainians applying for Temporary Protected Status (TPS); over 250 attorneys have been mobilized through the L4GG Travel Fund to provide legal assistance to more than 13,000 migrants at the border and in detention centers; our online Know Your Rights sessions have reached more than 40,000 views; and more than 1,500 asylum seekers have been assisted in preparing for and completing their Credible Fear Interviews.
Today: A National Network Delivering Justice Where It’s Needed Most
Our impact is made possible by a vast network of pro bono attorneys, allied law firms, universities, community organizations, and generous supporters who believe in the transformative power of access to justice. Project Corazón has a simple but powerful commitment: to bring justice wherever it is needed, ensuring that every person seeking safety has the dignity, protection, and opportunity to rebuild their life.
