A NOTE FROM OUR FOUNDER
From launching the first-ever pro bono litigation project for independent attorneys and fighting the unlawful termination of billions of dollars of climate funding in federal court, to laying the groundwork for a national legal initiative for detained asylum seekers and building a first-of-its-kind legal hub for transgender rights, this has been a season of bold, necessary action.
We’re continuing to step in where others can’t or won’t. We’re expanding clinics, filing lawsuits, supporting whistleblowers, and building new legal infrastructure to respond to the moment we’re in—and to prepare for what’s ahead.
And the impact is real. It’s visible in the pro bono attorneys who now have clear pathways to serve. In the detained asylum seekers who will gain access to legal help. In the federal climate grantees who still have a fighting chance because of your support.
So thank you: for showing up, taking action, and building this movement with us. No matter what comes next, I’m proud to be in this fight alongside you.
Pro Bono Litigation Corps:
Mobilizing Independent Litigators to Defend Democracy
Since its launch this spring, L4GG’s Pro Bono Litigation Corps has rapidly become a powerful force for justice. With nearly $1 billion in pro bono work redirected under political pressure, this program fills that gap by equipping unaffiliated attorneys—retired partners, solos, and former government lawyers—with malpractice insurance, case management systems, and research tools so they can take on critical litigation.
We’ve worked with dozens of organizations to file two federal lawsuits on behalf of environmental grantees whose funding was unlawfully terminated by the EPA:
June 25, 2025: Class action lawsuit on behalf of nonprofits, Tribes, and local governments over the termination of EPA’s $2.8 Billion Section 138 Environmental and Climate Justice Grant Program. An emergency injunction was denied on Sept. 25, and L4GG appealed on Oct. 27.
Oct. 6, 2025: Lawsuit filed over the unlawful termination of the $7 Billion Solar for All program.
We’re also representing federal employee whistleblowers at FEMA and EPA who faced discipline for signing letters of dissent, as well as additional groups within the State Department. And with our upcoming Court of Federal Claims Litigation and Education Clinic—an extension of our work protecting federal grantees under our Climate Change & Environmental Justice program—we’re training attorneys nationwide to recover unlawfully terminated grants, building lasting infrastructure for federal accountability litigation.
The New York Times has now spotlighted the Corps, not once, but twice, for its innovative model. With dozens of active cases underway and more attorneys joining weekly, we’re proving that when properly supported, independent litigators can play a significant role in defending democracy.
Climate Justice at a Crossroads: Urgent Action, Resilient Infrastructure
As federal climate funding faces unprecedented political threats, L4GG is meeting the moment with a powerful mix of legal advocacy, rapid response infrastructure, and on-the-ground support for those most impacted.
Through our Federal Fund Protection Initiative—in partnership with the Environmental Protection Network (EPN) and others—we’re defending billions in federal investments from clawbacks, freezes, and anti-DEI attacks. Our legal team is providing targeted guidance to hundreds of nonprofits, local governments, and Tribal communities to ensure they retain the resources they were promised.
This fall, we are expanding this work even further:
✅ Launched: Elective Pay Sprint Hub
Building on the success of our Clean Energy Tax Navigator - which has now served over 22,000 users nationwide - we launched the Elective Pay Sprint Hub last month. This hub helps nonprofits claim clean energy tax credits before critical deadlines. With H.R. 1 threatening key provisions of the Inflation Reduction Act, our goal is to support at least 500 projects and unlock over $20 million in clean energy tax benefits before phase-outs begin.
🔜 Launching Soon: Organizational Defense Services & Court of Federal Claims Assistance
In partnership with EPN, we’re preparing to expand our scope of services so that more nonprofits facing political retaliation under the Trump Administration get the support they need to both support their federal funding and to implement their community priorities, L4GG will serve as a trusted legal quarterback—guiding organizations toward the right counsel, resources, and protections.
From direct legal services through our Green & Equitable Communities Clinic, partnerships with 46 green banks through Green Bank 50, to our ongoing development of grantee-focused webinars and compliance tools, we’re not just defending funding—we’re helping hundreds of communities access and implement it.
Project Corazón: Expanding Legal Access for Asylum Seekers
Project Corazón continues to provide critical support to asylum seekers at a time when federal protections are rapidly eroding. We’ve hosted 15 Work Permit Clinics so far this year, engaging over 250 pro bono volunteers in helping to submit more than 150 applications through our high-impact, remote pro bono model—and continue to provide legal information and guidance to hundreds of migrants every week.
Our newest initiative, the Detention Bridge Project, is designed to meet two urgent needs: increasing transparency across the U.S. detention system and expanding legal access for detained immigrants. Phase one of the project is underway now, deploying experienced immigration attorneys to various detention centers and building a nationwide public-facing database that documents facility-specific conditions, access protocols, and procedural updates—offering critical infrastructure for legal organizations and advocates. In early 2026, we’ll expand our clinics to deploy trained pro bono attorneys to underserved detention centers, starting in Texas and the East Coast.
By creating clear access points for attorneys, especially those without prior immigration experience, the project will help deliver timely legal support to some of the most vulnerable asylum seekers in the country, while providing broader accountability tools for litigation and oversight.
Defending Reproductive Rights and Advancing Health Equity
This summer, we launched our Policy Resource Hub for Transgender Rights, a first-of-its-kind legal tool that offers daily-updated analysis of gender-affirming care bans, anti-trans laws, and conflicting protections across all U.S. states and territories. Designed for trans individuals, providers, families, and advocates, it cuts through legal chaos and affirms our unwavering commitment: you are not alone.
We continue to update our Policy Resource Hub for Reproductive Rights daily, and are preparing to launch a new section tracking documentation and reporting requirements across jurisdictions. Our Reproductive Health Digest delivers timely legal analysis to thousands every two weeks, and our work with ACOG on hospital protocols is helping providers in restrictive states deliver the most comprehensive, legally sound care possible.
In parallel, we’re supporting litigation to preserve access to gender-affirming care, advising legislators on Comstock Act repeal efforts, collaborating with law school research projects, and helping lead national advocacy to protect Medicaid and Title X funding.
Together, we're building an ecosystem of legal tools and partnerships to protect the fundamental right to bodily autonomy—for everyone.
The Impact Docket: Quick Actions. Real Results.
Since spring, our bi-weekly Impact Docket has turned outrage into action, mobilizing lawyers and advocates to defend democracy, due process, and the rule of law. Together, through 20 campaigns thus far, our community has helped flood the public record with hundreds of substantive comments defending the EPA’s authority to regulate climate pollution, stood up against federal power grabs, opposed dangerous judicial nominees, and pushed Congress to strengthen court ethics and voting protections.
We’ve also expanded volunteer opportunities across key issue areas, from asylum and work permit clinics to litigation through L4GG’s growing Pro Bono Litigation Corps. Each action, whether two minutes or two hours, is strengthening our collective power to meet this moment.
