A NOTE FROM OUR FOUNDER

As we soon say goodbye to spring and look toward a critical summer and fall, I’ve been reflecting on the extraordinary work this community has done over just the past few months. The season may be winding down, but our momentum is only accelerating.

Whether it’s helping hospitals deliver life-saving care in the face of restrictive abortion laws, ensuring communities can access the clean energy funding they’re owed, or expanding legal pathways for asylum seekers—we are stepping in where justice is most urgently needed. This work isn’t theoretical. It’s real, it’s tangible, and it’s changing lives.

We’ve also witnessed the power of our collective voice. On May 1, more than 10,000 lawyers and advocates rallied in over 50 cities to defend the rule of law—an effort L4GG helped build from the ground up. And with the launch of our Impact Docket, our community is turning action into outcomes every two weeks.

None of this is possible without you. Thank you for showing up. For taking action. For refusing to accept injustice as inevitable. There’s much more ahead—and I’m grateful to be in this fight with all of you.

10,000 Lawyers. 50 Cities. One Message:
The Rule of Law Must Be Defended.

On May 1, 2025, Lawyers for Good Government led the flagship Law Day of Action rally in front of the U.S. Supreme Court, where over 700 lawyers, legal professionals, and advocates gathered to stand for the rule of law. At the same time, coordinated events took place in more than 50 cities across the country, with over 10,000 participants reaffirming their commitment to defending the Constitution.

L4GG didn’t just lead on the ground—we also played a critical behind-the-scenes role in building the national infrastructure that made these events possible. From developing digital organizing tools to coordinating with bar associations and local hosts, our team helped power a nationwide movement.

In D.C., the message was clear: Lawyers don’t just respect the Constitution—we swear an oath to defend it. Speakers including Rep. Jamie Raskin, Rep. Mary Gay Scanlon, and National Bar Association President Wiley Adams reminded us that the legal profession has both the power and the responsibility to lead in times of democratic crisis.

This moment was historic. Our movement is just getting started.

Protecting Patients in a Post-Dobbs World: Hospital Model Policies Project

As abortion laws continue to shift and impact care across the country, we are helping hospitals in restrictive states provide the most comprehensive, legally permissible care possible. Through our State-Level Hospital Protocols Project, we’re partnering with the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and working directly with providers and hospital administrators to identify barriers to care and draft legally sound model policies that allow them to provide optimal care. What began in Georgia with a handful of hospitals in the state is now poised to grow—we’ll soon be working with hospitals in several other key states to replicate successes and ensure more patients get the care they are entitled to under the law.

In tandem, we’ve continued to provide targeted legal education for providers in Georgia, helping them navigate rapidly changing abortion laws through live sessions and daily-updated guidance in our Policy Resource Hub for Reproductive Rights.

And coming soon: we’re building on that successful model with the launch of our Policy Resource Hub for Transgender Rights, a first-of-its-kind tool that will track the range of federal and state-level laws and policies impacting trans rights across all 50 states every business day—launching later this month.

Expanding Legal Access for Asylum Seekers: From Work Permits to Asylum Applications

At Project Corazon, we believe that securing work authorization is a critical first step for asylum seekers to rebuild their lives with dignity and stability. This spring, we launched a series of legal clinics in partnership with leading law firms to provide free assistance with employment authorization applications and Social Security number requests. So far, we've hosted four clinics with approximately 20 attorneys each and have seven more scheduled. Our goal is to submit 250 work permit applications by the end of the year.

These clinics operate under a unique remote training and supervision model designed by our team, allowing attorneys—many new to immigration law—to provide high-quality, client-centered support under expert guidance. The success of this model has also enabled us to launch a new virtual format, allowing us to reach asylum seekers in under-resourced regions nationwide.

Together, these efforts represent a powerful legal safety net for those seeking refuge, protection, and the chance to thrive.

Helping Communities Unlock the Federal Climate Funding They Deserve

From local governments to nonprofits to Tribal communities, billions in clean energy funding is available—but far too many don’t have the resources to access it. At L4GG, we’re working to change that.

After 18 months, our Lighthouse Cohort—a partnership with the World Resources Institute (WRI)—is wrapping up with powerful results. Together, we've assisted over 40 local governments and helped 27 of them file for federal tax credits through elective pay. These municipalities are claiming at least 840 clean energy projects from the 2023 tax year, including 677 electric vehicle projects, 113 charging stations, and 50 solar installations. On average, each city is securing over $300,000 in tax benefits—vital funds that will go back into their communities for over $12M in total recovery by these cities.

Through our Federal Fund Protection Initiative, we’re now supporting almost 500 local governments, nonprofits, and Tribal entities covering 47 states and 4 territories as they work to protect and retain over $35 billion in climate and environmental justice funding. In collaboration with the Environmental Protection Network (EPN), and others, we’re helping grantees navigate anti-DEI policies, audits, and clawback threats through legal assistance, technical support, and strategic communications.

And in Washington State, our Clean Energy Technical Assistance Program (CETCAP) has been renewed for another two years. In its first year alone, we helped identify 441 eligible clean energy projects representing nearly $9 million in potential tax credit value—much of it in underserved and overburdened communities. With continued outreach and hands-on guidance, we’re working to ensure this vital funding doesn’t go unclaimed.

The Impact Docket: Quick Actions. Real Results.

Earlier this year, we launched the Impact Docket, a bi-weekly action newsletter designed to help lawyers and advocates take meaningful, timely action to protect democracy and human rights. Already, the response has been overwhelming: thousands of you have signed letters, contacted lawmakers, and stepped up for pro bono work.

Thanks to our community’s advocacy, Congress opened an investigation into DOGE following our campaign that mobilized nearly 700 people to send over 1,500 letters. And when we called on our community to stop Ed Martin’s nomination as U.S. Attorney for D.C., your swift response helped block it just days later.

Through the Impact Docket, our community has also stepped up for pro bono opportunities across a range of issue areas—from federal fund protection to work authorization and impact litigation—and helped amplify key advocacy efforts like opposing extreme nominations and fighting back against anti-democracy legislation.
