Letter delivered to Senate Judiciary Committee ahead of July 15 confirmation hearing
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Lawyers for Good Government (L4GG) today delivered an open letter to the United States Senate signed by 2,631 American lawyers and legal professionals from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico, calling on every senator to oppose the confirmation of Todd Blanche as Attorney General of the United States.
The letter arrives ahead of Blanche's Senate Judiciary Committee confirmation hearing, scheduled for July 15–16, and will be delivered directly to the offices of every member of the committee.
The signers represent the full breadth of the American legal profession — solo practitioners and partners at major firms, public defenders and former prosecutors, law school faculty and retired judges, civil rights lawyers and corporate counsel — united by a shared concern about what Blanche's record means for the independence of federal law enforcement.
"No one in the history of the Justice Department has moved directly from representing a president in criminal proceedings to running the institution that prosecuted those cases," said Traci Feit Love, Founder and Executive Director of Lawyers for Good Government. "Todd Blanche isn't America's Attorney General. He is Donald Trump's personal fixer with a federal badge. The Senate has a constitutional obligation to say no."
The breadth of documented consequences under Blanche's leadership, the letter argues, makes his disqualification clear: criminal inquiries launched against the president's perceived political opponents, motions to vacate the seditious conspiracy convictions of those who attacked the Capitol on January 6, and the proposed $1.776 billion settlement of Trump's own lawsuit against the IRS — routed through a fund with no independent oversight and paired with an agreement barring the IRS from pursuing tax claims against Trump, his family, and his businesses.
"This is not a partisan letter," Love added. "Attorneys General of both parties have told the Senate that the Department of Justice must be free from political interference. Todd Blanche has rejected that on the record. Nearly 3,000 lawyers and other legal professionals — in every state in the country — are asking the Senate to hold that line."
