L4GG Responds to Supreme Court Decision Upholding Birthright Citizenship

WASHINGTON – Estuardo Cifuentes, Program Manager of Project Corazon at Lawyers for Good Government (L4GG) and an asylee, issued the following statement in response to today's Supreme Court decision in Trump v. Barbara:

“Today's Supreme Court decision is a landmark victory for the Constitution, for immigrant families, and for every child born on American soil. The Court has reaffirmed what the Fourteenth Amendment has guaranteed for over 150 years: if you are born in the United States, you are an American citizen — full stop. No president can erase that promise with the stroke of a pen.

“This ruling is a decisive rejection of executive overreach and a reaffirmation of the rule of law. More importantly, it brings relief to families who have lived with fear and uncertainty about their children's future, giving them something every family deserves: stability, protection, and the ability to plan their lives with dignity.

“But today's victory should not be mistaken for the end of the fight. Justice Kavanaugh's separate opinion is a reminder that the future scope of birthright citizenship may continue to be contested. While the Court rejected this attempt to end birthright citizenship by executive order, questions remain about how future efforts to narrow this constitutional guarantee could be pursued. Immigrant families deserve certainty that their children's citizenship will never become a political bargaining chip.

“Today, the Constitution held, but we will keep fighting to make sure its promises extend to everyone.”
