“Members of Congress must put aside their partisanship and immediately impeach and remove Donald John Trump from office and disqualify him from ever again holding future office.”

On January 6, 2021, L4GG drafted a letter (full text below) demanding that President Donald J. Trump - and all others who participated in the insurrection that day - be held accountable for their actions. More than 7,500 attorneys and 7,500 non-attorney activists signed their names. On February 12, 2021, we will send our full letter to every member of the United States Senate, highlighting the number of attorneys and activists from each state demanding that they vote to convict and disqualify Donald Trump from ever again holding public office. If you haven’t yet added your name, please do so now.

Below is the full text of our original letter, drafted on January 6, 2021:

TO PROTECT THE RULE OF LAW AND DEMOCRACY, WE CALL FOR IMMEDIATE IMPEACHMENT AND INVOCATION OF THE 25TH AMENDMENT TO REMOVE DONALD J. TRUMP FROM OFFICE

As Americans, we believe in democracy and that elections have consequences. As attorneys, we have dedicated our lives to upholding the rule of law. The American people have spoken and voted President Donald John Trump out of office.

But President Trump refuses to acknowledge the will of the people. He has vowed he “will never concede” the election. He called on his supporters to “get rid of the weak Congresspeople.” His personal counsel Rudy Giuliani asked supporters to decide the election using “trial by combat”.

On January 6, 2021, a group of his supporters took these words and acted. They stormed the United States Capitol Building and interrupted a joint session of Congress. At the time of drafting, reporting indicates that bombs have been placed in the US Capitol and the Republican National Committee, and at least one person was shot within the Capitol Building.

These words and actions are profoundly damaging to our republic. They are the crimes of solicitation of violence and, according to some legal scholars, sedition. To uphold the rule of law and our democracy, those with the power to respond must do so immediately and with the full force of their office.

  • Vice President Pence must immediately convene the Cabinet and vote to declare Donald John Trump unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, and assume the powers and duties of the office of Acting President, in order to allow for the peaceful transition of power.

  • Members of Congress must put aside their partisanship and immediately impeach and remove Donald John Trump from office and disqualify him from ever again holding future office.

  • In the weeks and months ahead, Congress and the Executive Branch must enact a truth commission to investigate the unlawful activities of any person who contributed to these profoundly damaging crimes and to make referrals to law enforcement where appropriate.

Thank you.
