Lawyers for Good Government Calls for Immediate Removal of President Trump

125,000-Strong Network of Attorneys Demand Impeachment and Invocation of 25th Amendment

WASHINGTON — Lawyers for Good Government (L4GG), a national nonprofit mobilizing its network of more than 125,000 attorneys in defense of democracy and the rule of law, today calls on members of Congress to begin impeachment proceedings, and on Vice President Vance and the Cabinet to immediately invoke Section 4 of the 25th Amendment, to remove President Donald J. Trump from office.

Our nation’s leader has promised to commit war crimes of a horrific scale if he does not get what he wants by 8pm ET this evening. This is not hyperbole or an empty threat, but an inflection point that he has been driving our country toward for months, without the support or approval of the American people. His actions place our country’s military in peril and place us at odds with the international order. He must be stopped.

As attorneys, we have pledged an oath to uphold the Constitution and are dedicated to the rule of law. The power of impeachment and the 25th Amendment exist precisely for moments like this — when a president’s fitness for office is in grave doubt, and when his conduct poses a direct threat to the safety of the American people, our armed forces, and the stability of the world. That moment is now.
— Traci Feit Love, Executive Director and Founder of Lawyers for Good Government.

Today's threats did not emerge from a vacuum. They are the latest and most alarming expression of a pattern of conduct that has raised grave questions about this president's fitness for office. We are not calling for his removal because of a single post. We are calling for it because that post makes undeniable what has been true for some time. President Trump's escalating conduct in connection with the ongoing war against Iran — including his Easter Sunday threat to bomb civilian power plants and bridges, and today's declaration that "a whole civilization will die tonight" — reflects a pattern of behavior that raises grave questions about the President's fitness and capacity to discharge the duties of his office. These threats not only stymie critical cease-fire discussions, but represent incitement to war crimes under international law under the Geneva Convention and U.S. law under 18 U.S.C. § 1091. They demand a constitutional response.

This is not the first time L4GG has sounded this alarm. In January 2021, following the attack on the United States Capitol, more than 12,000 lawyers and other supporters signed our letter demanding that President Trump be impeached, removed, and disqualified from future office. That letter recognized what remains true today: when a president's words and actions constitute a direct threat to democracy and human life, those with the power to respond must use it.

Congress holds the power of impeachment — the ability to remove a president for high crimes and misdemeanors, and to permanently disqualify him from future office. Separately, Section 4 of the 25th Amendment empowers the Vice President and a majority of the Cabinet to declare the President unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office. Congress may then sustain that removal by a two-thirds vote of both chambers. These are not partisan tools. They are constitutional safeguards — written for exactly this kind of crisis.

We call on:

  • Members of Congress — in both parties — to initiate impeachment proceedings and to exercise every available constitutional authority to prevent further harm;

  • Vice President Vance and the Cabinet to immediately convene and vote to invoke Section 4 of the 25th Amendment; and

  • Congressional and Cabinet leaders to recognize that the oath they swore was to the Constitution, not to any individual.

Make no mistake: our call for this president's removal does not hinge on what happens tonight. Whether or not he follows through on this particular threat, the pattern of conduct is the issue; the deliberate terrorizing of civilian populations, the undermining of active diplomacy, the erratic and destabilizing behavior that has characterized this presidency. A president who governs by escalating ultimatum has already demonstrated his unfitness for office.

The rule of law is not a partisan value. It is the foundation on which everything else rests. L4GG and our network of attorneys across this country will continue to stand in its defense — and we call on every person in a position of power to do the same.
