L4GG Statement on Senate Passage of Trump's Anti-Democracy Budget Reconciliation Bill

Yesterday, the U.S. Senate passed President Trump's reconciliation bill by a vote of 51-50, advancing one of the most destructive pieces of legislation in recent history. Lawyers for Good Government (L4GG) condemns this dangerous bill that prioritizes tax cuts for billionaires while stripping healthcare, food assistance, environmental protections, and basic rights from millions of Americans, including lawfully present immigrants. We call on the House of Representatives to reject this assault on working families, farmers, states, local governments, vulnerable communities, immigrant families, and our planet's future.

A Moral and Legal Catastrophe: As legal professionals, we understand that access to healthcare, adequate nutrition, and economic stability are not luxuries—they are prerequisites for meaningful access to justice. When families cannot afford medical care, when children go hungry, when immigrant communities live in fear of deportation raids, when communities are poisoned by lead in drinking water, the promise of equal justice under law becomes hollow.

This bill systematically dismantles the social safety net that allows vulnerable Americans to participate fully in our legal system. It creates a two-tiered system where citizenship status determines access to basic necessities, where wealth determines access to clean energy and environmental protection, and where fear replaces the rule of law in immigrant communities.

The environmental rollbacks are particularly devastating for environmental justice communities—predominantly low-income communities and communities of color—who already bear a disproportionate burden of pollution. By gutting clean energy investments and mandating new fossil fuel extraction, this bill will increase toxic air and water pollution in the very communities that have the least political power to fight back. Children in these communities will face higher rates of asthma and other respiratory diseases, while families struggle with both pollution and the loss of healthcare coverage to treat resulting illnesses.

The legal profession has a special obligation to defend those who cannot defend themselves. This bill targets the most vulnerable Americans—children, seniors, immigrants, rural communities, and working families—while enriching those who need help least. These are attacks on human dignity that demand a response from the legal community.

The Fight Continues in the House

The bill now returns to the House of Representatives for a final vote. Despite claiming to stand with working people, Congressional Republicans have chosen to make working families poorer, sicker and less safe while delivering massive tax breaks to billionaires.

We call on every member of the House to reject this morally bankrupt legislation. The choice is clear: stand with working families, vulnerable communities, and the principles of equal justice, or enable the largest upward transfer of wealth in American history.

We urge legal professionals across the country to contact their Representatives immediately and demand a NO vote. Our clients, our communities, and our commitment to justice demand nothing less.

The legal community has always stood as a bulwark against injustice. Today, that role is more critical than ever.
